Online Tax Filing

Online tax filing provides an easy, hassle-free way of filing your taxes. Even if you never filed taxes before, online tax filing will get you through the process, quickly and affordable.

Why File Taxes Online?

There is little reason to file your taxes the traditional way ever again! With online tax filing, you are guided step by step to ensure that your tax returns are accurate. Help is always available at the click of a button through an interactive system built directly into the program. Because everything is outlined for you, you will only need your W2s, 1099s, and other documents to complete your taxes.

Online tax filing makes your life easier. It works with the IRS system, E-file, which electronically files your tax returns. There is no need to worry about missed deadlines because you won’t have to send them by mail. At the end, you only need to click a button to send your tax returns. You can also print out a copy for your records.

With online tax filing, you will not pay a tax accountant’s professional fees to get your taxes filed. Online tax filing is as low as $20, which saves you money. Because online tax filing systems are designed to catch errors, you don’t have to worry about your information being wrong. Also, online tax filing offers deductions tools so you can accurately enter your deductions and maximize your tax refund.

You can also opt to receive your tax refund check via direct deposit. With online tax filing, all you have to do is enter your bank account and routing numbers to request a direct deposit. The best part is that you will receive your refund check in half the time. Plus, you can skip the line at the bank and the time it takes for the check to clear.

What Do I need to File my Taxes Online?

Just gather your W2’s, 1099s, receipts, and other necessary documents. All the information you need is contained within these documents. Online tax filing systems will guide you through the documents. Online tax filing allows you to look in the correct area and fill in the number on the online form. You will not have to worry about reading the wrong box or entering the wrong number. Everything is outlined so you can quickly and easily file your taxes.

Online tax filing programs come equipped with a deduction finder. This ensures that you have fully taken advantage of every available deduction. Just answer yes or no questions and the online tax filing program will guide you to the right deductions. With a system so accurate, there is no need to worry about missed deductions.

The Bottom Line

Online tax filing is the easiest way to file your taxes and offers the best way to pay your taxes and receive your refund check. If you want a hassle-free, easy way to file your taxes, give online tax filing programs a try.

E-file Gains in Popularity

With a record 141 million individual returns filed for 2008 tax year represent a increase of  6 percent over previous year that used e-file.

With a record of 95 million returns e-filed compared to previous year of 90 million indicates  more people are using the Internet especially where filing taxes are concerned.  According to the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) two out of three taxpayers e-filed this year totaling 67 percent of returns filed.

Home Computer Tax Filing

Individuals using home computers and free e-filing services represents the significant increase. Many companies , including my own offer online tax filing services with a free version taxpayers can use to e-file their returns.  Of course, IRS free e-file services are available to taxpayers.

Tax Filing using a home computer accounts for nearly 34 percent of all returns filed. This is an increase of  168 percent from a decade ago (IR-2009-99).   This figure seems to indicate home computer use and the Internet the norm.

How To Identify Your Home Business

As with any business,  naming the business is an important decision. The same applies to how your business is organized.

My previous post we looked at defining a business and understand “A Profit Motive”  is required to deduct business expenses and understand the difference between a business and a hobby.

With this said, either your business is organized as a sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company, or corporation, your annual income tax form requires you to provide you’re business name (if it’s different from your own name), your principal business or profession, your principal business code, and your employer identification number (EIN) if you are required to have one.

Basically what this means is your business must have a name. The name of your business can be your own name or you can choose any name you desire to identify your business. The choice is yours and yours alone. I suggest naming your business with a name that fits the profile of the business type you have chosen to establish. An example would be Sally’s Creations. If your name is Sally and you create greeting cards.

I suggest starting your first business as a sole proprietorship where you use your Social Security number to report your business earnings
and deductions on your tax return. IRS form 1040 Schedule C, Profit and Loss from Business, the correct form when filing your tax return.

Corporations, limited liability company (LLC) and partnerships can also be used as a business plan but keeping it simple is best unless you have prior business experience and feel a different business model best suite your needs. My suggestion is to keep it simple for now.

Home Business Tax Benefits

Materially Participation

Materially participation in your business is a requirement in order deduct losses. “Do you materially participate?”, a question asked on your tax return and must be positive to take advantages of tax breaks and deductions allowed. This is a no-brainer for most people as participation is required if any business is to flourish. If you do not participate, allowable deductions are very limited.

It is my belief that an informed business owner saves both time and money. Correctly identifying your business makes our Uncle Sam happy as well.
